YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Leadership Wilson, Inc. was formed as a program to develop and educate leaders of Wilson County, Tennessee and began its first class in October 1993. The Leadership Wilson program is based upon similar leadership programs located throughout the country in communities both larger and smaller than Wilson County.

As a part of its program, a group project committee in the first class was asked to present its project with regard to some educational aspects of Wilson County. The committee chose a youth leadership pilot program as its project. The committee felt that it was consistent with the goals of Leadership Wilson to begin the process of educating and training the youth of the community for leadership roles. The first class of Youth Leadership Wilson was conducted in 1994-95 with a total of 15 students.

PROGRAM GOAL:

To provide leadership training opportunities for a cross-section of Wilson County high school students through a program that values diversity and recognizes differing leadership styles.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To build leadership knowledge and improve interpersonal skills
  2. To provide models that explain a broad range of leadership styles
  3. To encourage initiative and creativity
  4. To identify and train potential leaders who might not otherwise be recognized
  5. To broaden horizons by presenting to the participants a broad range of information concerning Wilson County and its citizens
  6. To provide opportunities for innovative problem solving
  7. To create leadership networks and continuing learning processes that can be replicated in the community high schools
